Vanilla is the fruit of a climbing plant in the orchid family and is commonly known as the vanilla plant. It is the only member of the family used for anything other than ornamental purposes. It produces pods in the form of dark sticks that contain pulp with small black seeds. After harvesting, vanilla beans undergo several long and delicate processing stages before they can be used in cooking. This handling takes around a year later, making vanilla a highly sought-after spice.
